The Small Business Blog… What should it be?

Blogging for small business isn’t just about writing. It’s about listening, connecting and building relationships.

I enjoy blogging and often find myself writing about things I’m still learning. It’s the perfect example of “fake it till you make it.” In this case, I’ll be upfront that I’m still figuring out this topic. But I do have some thoughts to share…

This topic came to mind after talking with a new client about whether she wanted a blog on her new website. She had the same reaction I often hear from clients and friends when I bring up blogging: “What would I even write about?” It’s the classic blogger question—what to write when you constantly need fresh ideas.

I’ve answered this question many times for different people, so I thought I’d put my response in writing. Even though, as I mentioned earlier, I’m still figuring it out myself. Trust me, there’s hardly a Monday or Friday (my blogging days) that goes by where I don’t ask myself the same question when it’s time to write.

That said, here’s a list of topics I tend to write about…

Show What You Know

I like to think of a small business blog like a free sample at a grocery store. You’re offering people a small taste of your work, knowledge and experience for free. Most won’t make a purchase but a few will and that makes it worth the effort.

For my blog, this would include things like my “Back to Basics” series.

Share Your Thoughts

Things are always changing—news, your industry, the seasons. You probably have opinions on how these changes affect what you do. Your blog is the perfect space to share those thoughts. By doing so, you not only keep your customers informed but also give them your unique perspective on what’s happening.

What It’s Like to Work With Me

I’m a bit of a quirky person. I tend to be funny, sarcastic and sometimes a little blunt. I believe I’m good at what I do (and luckily, others think so too) but I do have a big personality and not everyone enjoys working with me. I try to write the way I am. So, if you don’t like my tone on the blog, you probably won’t enjoy my company over a sushi lunch (which, by the way, will most likely be sushi).

Blogging is a great way to show your personality, tell your story, and give a face to your small business.

Share What You’re Working On

Got new inventory? Learned a new process or made changes to how you work? Your blog is the perfect place to share updates like that.

As for my blog, I don’t have a great example this week but check back next week—I promise I will (wink).

To wrap up, it’s not always about what you say. Just get out there, share your voice and give your readers (and search engines) fresh content about what you’re doing. Be interesting—you do that all the time, right?

The Global Small Business Blog

In today’s world, small businesses aren’t just local, they can reach customers all around the globe. A global small business blog is a space to share insights, tips and experiences that apply not only to your local market but also to the broader world. Whether it’s discussing how different countries approach business, sharing strategies for expanding into new markets or offering advice on dealing with global challenges, this type of blog helps connect small businesses with a worldwide audience.

By sharing knowledge on a global scale, you’re not just growing your own business—you’re contributing to a community of entrepreneurs who can learn from each other.

A blog is not a business tool. It is a communication channel. Through it, you inform, educate and inspire your audience.
